EDITORIAL
Welcome to the December edition of the Sporting Motorist. The year is fast running out with very few motorsport events left before Christmas. One still to come of course is our Xmas get together / demonstration laps day at Baskerville on Sunday December 19th. Details can be found elsewhere in the newsletter. It would be great to get a big roll up of cars and people to finish the year off on a high. Let’s hope the weather is kind to us. A significant club event that was just held, was the club’s AGM at the Carlyle hotel on the evening of the 25th November. It was pleasing to see a respectable number of people make the effort to come along. The main reason was of course to elect office bearers for the coming year, which I am pleased to say resulted in nearly the full number of postions being filled. Also on the night, the club awards for the 2003 year were presented. Details on both of these happenings are mentioned later in the newsletter. Until next edition, hoping everyone has a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. COVER PHOTO
This months photo is of our new 2005 Secretary Scott Waters in his Escort in hot pursuit of Rod Gelston in the EH, at the recent V8 Supercar meeting at Symmons Plains. I believe Scott had a few problems with oil pressure prior to qualifying, missed qualifying, and subsequently had to start from the back of the grid. Along with Scott there were another five HSCC members who also competed at Symmons in the Group N Historic touring car races. Dashing Darryl Wilcox in the Monaro, Damien Moore (Escort), Barry Mitchell (EH Holden), Rodney Creed (Cooper S), and Michael Cross in the Torana XU1. I wasn’t there on the Sunday, but looking at the results, all appeared to have finished all races, so hopefully everyone had a great time. Another HSCC competitor at Symmons was Sam Walter who competed in the Lotus Trophy races. Sam qualified 3rd fastest out of 17 identical cars and his best result was a 4th in race 2. I think that is a great result in a very competitive class. Well done Sam and all the Historic guys. To check out the results from any event throughout Australia go to www.natsoft.com.au

AGM)
A big welcome to all those in attendance here tonight and I trust that you all have an enjoyable evening speaking with fellow motor sport friends and competitors. It gives me much pleasure in making the various Club Awards later this evening and it is obvious to me, that in life, awards such as these are achieved through dedication to the task at hand and a determination to succeed, and that if these principles are applied constantly then awards such as these are made to well deserving competitors, track officials and / or Club Members. Looking back now over the past couple of years in my term, the highlights have been firstly the Formula Vee National Challenge in October 2003 and how much the mainland competitors and crews really enjoyed themselves, plus of course our very successful 50th Anniversary celebration weekend in March of this year. Both the Formula Vee event and the 50th Celebration weekend were run very well with a reasonable profit from the later. It was something special to see many old friends catch up over the Celebration weekend and it was very gratifying to hear Gary Rogers say just how well our weekend was run, that our Club really put on an event much better organized than many larger mainland motor sport Clubs could ever achieve. On another matter over the past year our Club has moved into the latest century with its own web site www.hobartsportingcarclub.org and a big thank you to all those involved with this and particularly to the Hobart firm Info-Bulletin of 2 Bowen Road Moonah who contributed many hours at no cost to our Club to set this site up. In regard to the future, we now have the funds and plans drawn up to construct our very own Club rooms at Baskerville raceway. It is my hope that this will happen over the next twelve months, and if so, the proposed Club rooms should provide us with a suitable place to display some of our Club Memorabilia and this should make a wonderful display for both Club members and visitors alike. We are also now in serious discussion with Phil Ward from Sydney to determine bringing some 30 Aussie Racing Cars to Baskerville in June 2005, so that with the potential Club rooms project and the Aussie Racing Cars meeting, it should be a challenging and exciting twelve months ahead. In closing, my genuine thanks to all of the Committee members over the past year and as we know there were times of stress, however we have come out the other side with plenty of reason to be proud of the iconic Hobart Sporting Car Club and the roles that we have played in the Clubs history. The latest CAMS circular advises that there will be no increase in 2005 competition licence fees. The fees payable for affiliation by clubs and the cost of junior licences will actually be decreased. CAMS also reminds competitors in their latest magazine, that all cars in circuit racing other than 5th category, fitted with electric fuel pumps must be configured so that the power to the pump is removed when the engine stops turning. This minimises the chance of an electric fuel pump feeding a fire after a collision. See the Winter 2004 CAMS Magazine for further information on how this can be achieved. This requirement has been in place for EFI cars for quite a few years. If you are looking for that last minute Xmas gift then a few recent book releases may be of interest:- The Sound and the Fury (192pg) by Bill Tuckey celebrates a century of Australian motor sport. Legends of Speed (404pgs) by Bill Woods presents a roll call of Australia’s best in motor sport. Marcos Ambros: The Devil Racer gives a fascinating insight into his life and V8 Supercars. DAY
SUNDAY 19th DECEMBER BASKERVILLE Our club is to hold a “demonstration laps” day on the above date to give some Make A Wish Children and MS Society people a Christmas thrill by taking them around Baskerville race track at a brisk pace. This is a non competitive day so one race vehicle on the track at a time to meet CAMS approval and also a CAMS licence and civil licence is required. Road going vehicles are acceptable, we simply need a passenger seat in the demonstration lap car plus a helmet for the driver and passenger. Your family, friends and sponsors are also most welcome to take a ride as we envisage the timeline will run along as follows and there should be plenty of time for many people to enjoy some demonstration laps:- 9:30am to 12:00 Demonstration Laps for Make A Wish and MS Society people. 12:00 to 1:00pm BBQ and cordial (free for guests and all children), small charge to others. 1:00 to 5:00pm Demonstration Laps for family, friends and sponsors. Please give me a ring on 0418 124171 to make your car available for the day. If you don’t have a suitable car please come along anyway to help out with the BBQ and enjoy some like minded company at Christmas time. MERRY CHRISTMAS --- Ray Williams - President __________________________________________________________________________________________ Images from Symmons Plains

safety aspect).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Such is life:
WOMEN'S REVENGE: "Cash, check or charge?" I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase. As she fumbled for her wallet I noticed a remote control for a television set in her purse."So, do you always carry your TV remote?" I asked. "No," she replied, "but my husband refused to come shopping with me, so I figured this was the most legal evil thing I could do to him." UNDERSTANDING WOMEN: A MAN'S PERSPECTIVE I know I'm not going to understand women. I'll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax, pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root, and still be afraid of a spider. WIFE vs. HUSBAND: A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?" "Yep," the wife replied, "in-laws." CREATION: A man said to his wife one day, "I don't know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time. " The wife responded, "Allow me to explain. God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you! WORDS: A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day... 30,000 to a man's 15,000. The wife replied, "The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men...The husband then turned to his wife and asked, "What?"
